History

Chi Iota Pi Sorority, Inc. (ΧΙΠ) is a multicultural non-profit collegiate sorority founded on November 23, 2004, by 8 women from the University of Maryland whose ethnicities included Caucasian, Latina, and South Asian. The sorority, although young in comparison to its other Greek counterparts, has expanded to several institutions and has reached a higher level of diversity through the addition of ethnic representation of African, African-American, East Asian, Caribbean, European, and Multiracial women. The organization focuses on empowering its sisters, campus communities, local communities, and larger communities through educational, advocacy, service, and social programming.

Chi Iota Pi began with one chapter and has grown every semester since we began this journey. Within 2 years, Chi Iota Pi had membership intake at a new university, Trinity DC University in Northeast Washington, DC. Since expanding to Trinity DC University, and with our presence at the University of Maryland, the organization has established a well-known presence in the DC Metropolitan area, one that has allowed us to collaborate with fellow Greeks from different cultural and philanthropic causes. Through our networking and collaboration, our organization has built great working relationships with organizations that have been around almost a century or more than our young organization.

The difference between Chi Iota Pi and other organizations is a simple one that goes with our motto "Real Women. Real Sisterhood." We don't ask that young women compromise their unique personalities or complexities that make them individuals, instead we embrace everyone's personal story and struggle and build upon that to help young women become "Women of Leadership" forever more. That has been a truth since November 23, 2004. This is what brought together our 8 Founding Sisters, and this is what will continue attracting young collegiate women to our organization.

Chi Iota Pi was rejected initially by the University of Maryland's Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. But after 3 years of perseverance, we were accepted into the campus' United Greek Council. This has been our story wherever we have gone. We work hard to gain university administrations' respect and recognition. This has been a true tool to build our character.

We believe in 3 principles:

- COMPASSION -

- INTEGRITY -

- PERSEVERANCE -

These have been our greatest guides from our birth, and will be what leads us into our future.

"History in the making."
