History
Chi Iota Pi Sorority, Inc. was founded on November 23, 2004, at the University of Maryland, College Park. This captivating sisterhood was founded by eight courageous women ready for a change on their campus and on a worldwide level. Although founding this grand sisterhood was a difficult task, these women knew it would only be the beginning of a revolution.
Since the very beginning, when Founding Sisters were beginning their organizational meetings, the feeling that greatness was upon them was overwhelming. There were a few things that Founding Sisters had promised to uphold from the beginning. Value from the Founders are still upheld today, and as an organization, we promise to uphold them forever more.
Chi Iota Pi was founded as a a culturally un-biased sorority. Although the Founding Sisters were predominantly of Hispanic backgrounds, two Founders could not be wholly categorized as thus. So in a real representation of the Sisterhood that originated, Chi Iota Pi has chosen not to be culturally affiliated, but instead a culturally multi-faceted organization. We feel that this enables us to truly celebrate every Sister's unique attributes that she brings to Chi Iota Pi.
Chi Iota Pi was a private organization for months before becoming publicly known. Although speculation existed, and the University had us documented in the Office of Greek Life (now the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life) since our inception, Founding Sisters ensured that the organization's credibility was established from the beginnings by ensuring the organization was incorporated as a non-profit service organization. Our very first service project, without having any public recognition for it, was organizing a drive for donations to tsunami victims in the eastern hemisphere. Since then, Chi Iota Pi has strived to hold programs and do service that realistically help the community, raise funds, bring awareness and social consciousness, and unite the diverse communities.
In 2005 and 2006, Chi Iota Pi expanded to two other collegiate campuses. At Trinity University in Washington, D.C., the history of Chi Iota Pi is already being cultivated, and is expanding every year. Also in 2008 and 2009, Chi Iota Pi establish Colonies in Georgia and the Eastern Shore of Maryland, respectively. Furthermore, Chi Iota Pi has several Prospective Under/graduate Member Associations for Sisterhood that are looking to expand the organization in the future and a very strong Alumnae/Graduate Chapter that support all of the undergraduate endeavors.
Chi Iota Pi Sorority, Inc. is a young organization with an already rich history. We're excited for the history yet to be made. With Sisters not only present at our chapters and colonies, but in graduate schools, law schools, and locations ranging from Florida, New York, Texas, Ohio, and Michigan, Chi Iota Pi is surely to keep furthering our presence and impact nationwide. We are thankful for all the support we have received thus far and are looking forward for more to come. Interested women who would like to be Prospective Members, please contact us and find out how you can be a part of history in the making.
